View Full Version : I think I heard the most beautiful song in my life....

Hmmm.... I don't think is common to talk about a "beautiful" song on the forum of a metal band vocalist, but I'll do it anyway. I ordered the new Sieges Even CD and was absolutely knocked out by track three "Eyes Wide Open." For those that haven't heard of Sieges Even.... they aren't for everyone. They are progressive rock, not metal. Anyway, they pretty much wrote one of the best songs I have ever heard.

Interesting. Now I have to go get that album, listen to the song and then proceed writing one even better.
Life, and so music, is a competition, right? :D

I tend to goof around and shit, but even though I think you are a cool guy and all, had you not been one of the most awesome vocalists I have ever heard in my life, I probably wouldn't be here.
Having said all of that..... I think it IS a big challenge for you. Have you practiced up on your Journey style vocals ? One of the things that makes the song beautiful is the vocal style. You are an amazing vocalist, but when I played that Avalon ballad for you.... you didn't care for that "sweet" vocal style.
Sieges Even is old-man's music. There isn't much edge there. You wouldn't want to write music for old people would you ? Of course I am joking, but Sieges Even is melodic progressive rock, not metal. I would love to hear you give your best at that vocal style though. It might be interesting.

he can do it i think.

urbans one of the most unique (and good, not just different) vocalists ive ever heard in my opinion. i dont think i wouldve been much of a tad morose fan (i absolutely love them) or have gotten into bloodbound much if he wasnt on there. he can make a band with his delivery and unique sound.

Hmmm... while Urban does have a great voice, and I love hearing him sing things he's not sung on record (like singing along in the car or something), I'm not entirely sure I'd want to hear him do "Journey-like" vocals. Besides, I don't think Urban is at all fond of Steve Perry.

But... it would be interesting to know if he has anything up his sleeve for any upcoming music--any ballads or anything unusual coming up, Urban? :)

(No, I don't have any inside info... this is an honest question. )

Great reply my long lost Nephew !!

I agree about 85%. Although I am a guitarist, I am like anyone else with listening to bands... the vocalist "typically" makes or breaks the band. There are exceptions though. I like some Neil Young and I have heard creative flatulance better than his voice. The very early Yngwie could have had "Big Bird" singing for him and I wouldn't have cared. He was in such a different league as everyone else at the time. Songwriting is a big factor as well, but Urban has that gift as well.
As far as Urban being able to "do it".... I don't know, but we will see. Urban is far from "limited" in his style, but ALL vocalists are unfortunately limited to some degree to their own physical make-up in their vocals chords. Every vocalist sounds unique by the grace of God and it is difficult at best for one vocalist to sound like another. That is not to say a very gifted and practiced vocalist can't sound like many out there though. Urban sounded about as good as Tara at the PPUSA karaoke, and I am sure she sings the Queensryche stuff often.

Actually the Sieges Even guy, Arno Menses sounds more like a slightly trained Don Brown (38 Special vocalist) than Steve Perry. Brown and Menses are natural tenors and probably spent less time on vocal technique than guys that have spent their lives working on their voices. Menses is a former drummer. I guess one day he somehow figured out he can sing and wrote Sieges Even a letter claiming he was going to be their vocalist and now the Dane is the vocalist for the premier German Prog-rock band.
I have no problem with ballads being a Vanden Plas fan, but I want to hear Andy sing ballads, not Urban. I think I would enjoy a ballad from Urban, but not a disc full of them.

now, i agree about 85% haha. A vocalist doesn't usually make or break a band for me, however they can. I dont have to like the vocals, but, if its a vocalist like urban, dio, dickinson, kurch- i could probably get into anything the instruments did. Every vocalist does have something different, but you can clump together the masses easily and there not be much difference or anything outstanding they do different. Its different, at least for me, in the cases of some of the better vocalists, some mentioned above.

hahaha. well, yes. how bout a 98 degrees cover instead?

Good reply my brother !! I can't even remember what I wrote, but I guess at the time it was important to me or I wouldn't have made a post so ldamned long.

My little brother...... we agree about 85%. You can't get better than that. You kick ass !! You forgot to add Udo and Tony Martin to that list though. Merry Christmas my Brother !!

Oh please not *lol* I'm just trying to think positiv! If Urban would do a BSB cover i can't go on with it! haha

hmm, Sieges Even are going to play at the Rock Hard Festival in my hometown. Does not really fit between the other bands, but at the last festival the put a progressive band on the list also ( Spock's Beard ) . I think they can win the audience. I tell you then ;-)

Yeah I guess you have moved up the food chain. I have been known to consume nephews from time to time, but only when my little brother and I have been fighting has there been his flesh in my mouth....so feel good about that. The mature hominid muscle is a little tough and has to be cooked in a pressure cooker over time to be pallateable. That is way too much trouble...so I have given up on the adults.
I hope you had a great Christmas.. as well as everyone else here.

I was making fun of myself more than Urban with the BSB thing. A couple of years ago I heard a song at work when someone was listening to one of the "mix" stations. It was a ballad, but very well crafted, and the vocalist had a nice voice, the music was good with some nice acoustic piano and guitar etc. I tried to remember as many words as I could and looked it up on the net..... it turned out to be "Incomplete" by The Backstreet Boys. I won't go buy their boxed set mind you, but I was impressed with the one song.
As far as Sieges Even.... with the exception of a few Rush and Asia songs... I never cared for progressive rock. I still don't, but I make an exception with Sieges Even. I think the Germans have some magic unfiltered beer over there or something that makes the prog bands great. Vanden Plas pretty much rules the prog-metal world in my ears and Sieges Even is the only prog-rock band I really like as well. Sieges Even doesn't have an aggressive style and may not be able to do well after a heavier style band that could really get the crowd excited, but who knows ? They are very good at what they do.

Well... how was Sieges Even ? I have a Dutch friend (lifetime metal-head) who is nuts about those guys. He says they are great live. I am curious what you thought about their performance.
